The Internet community woke up recently to the picture of an unidentified lady receiving a dummy cheque as the Best Graduating Student. It was not long before the picture went viral with different reactions trailing it.
To many, their annoyance and reactions stemmed from the fact that the dummy cheque had written clearly on it the name of the first indigenous University in Nigeria, UNN and also the logo of a foremost commercial bank, the Guaranty Trust Bank.
However, both the bank and the University has come out to distance themselves from sponsorship of the said award. The University made this known in a post on its official Facebook Page saying the University does not give out two awards for Best Graduating students but one and this is always given during an award ceremony on the eve of the University’s Convocation. The post went further to say that the award was from the University’s Medical Students Association to its member and not from the University. It also said that in the event that the University decides to give out an award, it is done by the University’s Vice-Chancellor and not by a student as seen in the picture.
Similarly, the Guaranty Trust Bank, has denied sponsoring the award, saying the bank is only an agent out to carry out the instruction given to it by its customers, in this case, the University of Nigeria Medical Students Association. In an Instagram post on its official handle, the bank wrote
In the age of internet banking, GTWorld and 737, not everyone is going to make use of a cheque. But if you ever need to, here is what you should look out for in any cheque.
Despite the reactions and explanations given by the parties whose images and brands are at stake in this episode, Nigerians appear not to be anyway satisfied with the situation of things as regards the country’s educational sector.
The picture once again has thrown up the debate on the quality and usefulness of the Nigerian Educational system and whether it brings about a useful reform in the country’s Educational system as the #nottooyoungtorun campaign did, no one can tell only the future can.
