It was an interesting encounter yesterday at the main bowl of the Akanu Ibiam Stadium, here in UNN, as the Green Lions of UNN handed a 2-0 defeat to their counterparts from the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli Anambra State.
The match which was began at about 10am in the morning is one of the series of matches being played to determine the schools to represent the Zone G at the 25th NUGA Games 2017, to hosted by the University of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM).
The Green Lions of UNN pulled off dazzling performances which held the home crowd spellbound all through the duration of the game. However, the UNN team appeared too wasteful as they missed a whole lot of good opportunities which if had been utilized would have seen the team from Anambra State going home with a basket full of goals.
In a similar encounter, the boys from the Enugu State University escaped with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the team from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The game which was played by 4pm at the Akanu Ibiam stadium was really a tough encounter. The ESUT team fought very hard to clinch all three points while the Umudike team, banking on their first match victory over UNIZIK, played for a draw. However, luck ran out on them when in about the 72nd minutes, the ball was fouled in the penalty box, which the centre referee quickly awarded to ESUT. The player from ESUT did not waste anytime in pitting the ball excellently into the goalpost to grant ESUT the much coveted three points.
So, as it stands now, out of the six teams participating in the Group G Zonal Preliminaries, three teams of UNN, ESUT and Umudike all have three points with the duo of UNN and ESUT left of a match against each other.
The football matches continue Saturday at the Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN with UNIZIK battling it out with the Chukwuemeka Ojukwu University team in the morning while UNN and ESUT will take centre stage later on in the evening.
