The World has eyes on what the outcome of the Referendum conducted earlier today by the Iraqi Kurds would be.
The voting started in the early hours of today, Monday 25th September, 2017 and is reported to have been concluded as at 06.00pm same day with more than 75% of the over 5 million voters turning out to vote. According to Adjazeera.com, the counting of the votes began immediately while the result of the voting is expected to be published within 72 hours.
However, it is worthy to note that the outcome of the referendum, if a ‘yes for referendum’ will not translate automatically to independence. The Referendum is only to take note of the wishes of the people and thereafter form a basis for Kurdish officials in relation with the Iraqi Government. In fact, the Referendum is opposed by the Iraqi central government in Baghdad as well as the neighbouring countries of Turkey and Iran, besides major international powers such as US.
