Ezeja declares: We will not take it anymore, SARS operatives have become embarrassing…abuse to our constitutional rights.

Following the recent menace of the men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Enugu State Police Department in the student residential areas around the school, the President of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Ezeja Joshua has come out to say that the operations of the SARS team are unlawful and unconstitutional.

The SUG President who made this known in a release made public through his private Whatsapp number reassuring the students of his administration’s commitment towards putting an end to the menace.

The full text of the release, obtained by a member of the UNN INFOdirect Team, reads:

Beloved Lions, Lionesses and believers in the Lion Dream

I wish to inform you that it has come to our notice that the activities of SARS operatives have become embarrassing and a flagrant abuse to our constitutional rights and privileges as students of this great institution.

These operatives pick up students at random and demand very outrageous amounts as bail charges. We will not allow this continue!

The Students’ Union Government is swinging into action with immediate effect and we give our assurances that we will do our best to prevent the continuance of this menace.

Be rest assured that this SUG administration is committed to ensuring the overall welfare and safety of of the students and we will not fold our hands and watch the rights of the students abused.

Aluta Continua!

Vicoria Ascerta!

It could be recalled that SARS operatives suddenly became thorns in the flesh of students living outside the school premises, notably Hilltop and Odim areas. This was following the murder of a student at Hilltop on March 23rd, 2017.

In Nigeria, the simple mention of SARS send cold shivers down the spines of anyone. This is because, the outfit which was established as a unit of the Nigeria Police Force, to fight crime in the country ironically has over the years developed notoriety for unprofessional conduct.

Early this week, a Facebook user, Horlakunleym Muideen posted pictures of a young man alleged to have been killed in Ile-Ife by the operatives of SARS. In September 2016, Punch reported the arrest of a police officer attached to the SARS unit over the killing of one Master Joseph, an undergraduate student of a Polytechnic in Edo State. Also, SARS was heavily indicted for unprofessional conducts such as inhuman detention, tortures and bribery in a report released by the Amnesty International in September 2016. Every institution in the country seems not to be left out and with the latest release by the SUG, we hope a lasting solution is found for this incessant arrests of students of the University.
